When the people of Ferizaj woke up on Tuesday morning of last week, they heard the bad news about the burning of the first Albanian school in the city. The facility built during the years 1928-30 had served as the first lower gymnasium in the Serbian language.
With the occupation of Kosovo by the Italians and the Nazi Germans during the Second World War, in this facility, elementary school students would learn the Albanian alphabet for the first time with an Albanian teacher.
Historian Ramadani showed how the first students, gathered in the streets of the city, behaved.
Ferizaj artists had also officially proposed that a part of the protected cultural heritage object be turned into an art school.
Even the humanist and doctor of Ferizaj, Agim Bytyçi, who has collected hundreds of photos and facsimiles of documents of Ferizaj, recommended weeks ago that the material should be placed in this facility.
However, since the building burned down before the restoration had begun, it is not known how long it will take until its destination is determined.
