Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that the sanctions against Russia imposed by the European Union should be lifted, writes the pro-government newspaper Magyar Nemzet.
Orban, usually a fierce critic of EU sanctions against Moscow, presented his position in a closed-door meeting with members of his party on Thursday.
The Hungarian newspaper quoted Orbán's statement in which he pointed out that EU sanctions increased gas prices and inflation, and if these measures were lifted, gas prices would immediately drop by 50 percent, and inflation would also be controlled. .
"Without sanctions, Europe can regain its strength and can avoid the threatening recession," Orban said, repeating his previous position that sanctions hurt Europe more than Russia.
On his Facebook page, Orbani declared from the party meeting: "Brussels sanctions have pushed Europe into an energy crisis."
