KThe mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, has won the presidential runoff election against ultranationalist candidate George Simion, the BBC reported.
After counting 100 percent of the votes, Dan has received the support of 6.17 million residents or 53.6 percent of the votes, while his opponent, Simion, has won 5.34 million votes or 46.4 percent.
Dan addressed supporters, saying that this victory shows that Romania can change.
"It's your victory, you know. It's the victory of thousands and thousands of people who campaigned, who believed that Romania could change. Don't forget this strength, because we still have work to do," Dan declared.
Simion admitted defeat on Sunday evening, while congratulating his opponent on his victory.
"I am proud of you and congratulate my opponent on the victory," Simion said in a Facebook post.
