Abdixhiku is reconfirmed as LDK leader

Abdixhiku warns Rama

The fourth leader in the history of the oldest party in Kosovo survived the initiative to dismiss him on Thursday at the extraordinary LDK Assembly, held in Pristina. 170 delegates voted for his stay at the head of the party, while 152 were for his departure. The initiative to dismiss him was taken after the June 7 elections, when the LDK again emerged as the third party with 16.7 percent of the vote.

Lumir Abdixhiku has been reconfirmed as the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo.

The fourth chairman in the history of the oldest party in Kosovo survived the initiative for his dismissal on Thursday at the LDK Extraordinary Assembly, held in Pristina.

170 delegates voted for his stay at the helm of the party, while 152 were in favor of his removal.

In his speech after the Assembly, Abdixhiku said that he would avoid tendencies to divide the party and create crises that he called non-existent.

"I will pledge and try to unite the LDK as much as possible, but without compromising on our values, on what we believe, and avoiding any tendency to divide the LDK and create false crises," he said.

Abdixhiku also assessed that Thursday's development within the party is among the LDK's least proud points in its history.

"When there is internal competition in the LDK, there is always a celebration, today we do not feel like a celebration, we have started a process of overthrow, dismissal, I consider it the least proud point of the LDK in its 37-year history, but I am very grateful that our membership managed to show a clean slate once again," he said.

The initiative for his dismissal was taken after the June 7 elections, when LDK once again emerged as the third party with 16.7 percent of the vote.

Before the vote began, Abdixhiku gave a long speech calling the Assembly unnecessary and at the wrong time. He also made accusations against some of the party's senior officials, but without naming them.

And after the voting ended, among the first to react was Vjosa Osmani, the carrier of the LDK list in the last elections.

"Not every victory is ordinary. Some victories become inspiration. This is one of them," she wrote on Facebook.

Several delegates supporting Abdixhiku have also reacted, congratulating him on his victory.

"It was the right decision, there was no need for an Assembly at this stage. The result teaches everyone a lesson. We will not initiate processes that harm the party. Everyone will find the will and the way to give the LDK the necessary clarity," said Berat Rukiqi, the party's delegate.

Important figures of this party, such as Avdullah Hoti, Hykmete Bajrami, Armend Zemaj, Gazmend Muhaxheri, Imri Ahmeti and others have called for changes in the party's leadership. Few of them spoke after the meeting.

"Today we had an agenda item that I cannot pass. 152 were for, 170 against the dismissal. This is the political fate of the LDK. We thought that change brings success, the majority thought that we should continue with Abdixhiku. This is the result," said Zemaj.

But what is the history of this party and what are the challenges it has overcome in its 37 years of existence?

The party, founded in 1989 and led by former President Ibrahim Rugova for a decade and a half, is holding an extraordinary assembly on Thursday, where delegates will decide whether Lumir Abdixhiku will be dismissed or continue to lead the party.

In the June 7 elections, LDK came in third with 16.7 percent of the vote, despite the return of Vjosa Osmani to the party. This is the fourth consecutive time that this political entity has remained the third-largest force in the country.

In the first post-war elections, in 2001, the LDK under Rugova's leadership won 45.65 percent of the vote. It maintained almost the same result in 2004.

The decline began after Rugova's death in January 2006. At the end of that year, internal party elections were held, and the electoral assembly received the epithet "Assembly of Chairs", due to the physical clashes that occurred. Fatmir Sejdiu was elected chairman, while his opponent, Nexhat Daci, together with supporters formed a new political entity - the Democratic League of Dardania.

In the 2007 elections, LDK fell to 22 percent of the vote and for the first time came in second place, behind PDK. However, it remained part of the government in coalition with its rival.

In 2010, Isa Mustafa took over the leadership of the party, after defeating Sejdiu, who had previously resigned from the post of president because the Constitutional Court found that he had committed a violation by leading both the state and the party. In the elections that year, the LDK received 24% and remained in opposition for the first time.

Four years later, in the 2014 elections, Mustafa's party received 25%, and after a political deadlock, he formed a coalition government with the PDK.

The 2017 elections marked another decline, as the LDK came in third for the first time, receiving 25% of the vote. Two years later, it returned to second place and formed a government with Vetëvendosje, but the coalition lasted only a few months.

In the 2021 elections, another split occurred. Vjosa Osmani left the LDK and founded the 'Guxo' party. In this electoral process, the LDK recorded its worst result in history, securing only 12 percent of the vote. Following this result, Isa Mustafa resigned and Lumir Abdixhiku was elected as the party's leader.

In the February 9, 2025 elections, the LDK increased to 18 percent, but remained in third place. After the early elections of December 28, the result fell to 13 percent. Abdixhiku offered to resign, but the delegates refused to accept it and confirmed him as the head of the party.

In the June 7 elections, Osmani returned to the LDK and led the electoral list. The party again came in third, with 16.7 percent of the vote.

Abdixhiku called the result a success. But the LDK branches in Peja, Lipjan and the Second Branch in Pristina demanded his resignation.

After this request was rejected, in early July, the collection of signatures began for the call for an extraordinary Assembly, in which Abdixhiku's legitimacy would be tested.

Abdixhiku's reconfirmation is expected to pave the way for the continuation of negotiations for the formation of a government.

The deadline for the constitution of the Assembly is August 7, while the meeting is scheduled for August 6.

LDK returns to negotiations with VV

Albin Kurti Lumir Abdixhiku Vjosa Osmani

The newly confirmed leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, has confirmed that his party is open to an immediate return to negotiations with Vetëvendosje on the formation of institutions.

This process was suspended due to the LDK's invited Assembly, with the initiation of Abdixhiku's dismissal. But in the Assembly, Abdixhiku survived the vote of confidence.

At the post-Assembly conference, Abdixhiku said that from this moment on, he is lifting the suspension and the LDK is open to discussion on the issue of institutions.

Abdixhiku also admitted that in the first meeting with the leader of Vetëvendosje, Albin Kurti, there were discussions about the “balance of powers.” According to him, this means that a single party cannot lead all institutions. However, he denied that there were any other agreements.

The reconfirmed leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, has pledged to try to unite the party as much as possible, but without compromising on its values.

In his speech after the party's Assembly, Abdixhiku said that he would avoid tendencies to divide the party and create crises, which he called non-existent.

"I will pledge and try to unite the LDK as much as possible, but without compromising on our values, on what we believe, and avoiding any tendency to divide the LDK and create false crises," he said.

Abdixhiku further assessed that today's development within the party is among the LDK's least proud points in its history.

"When there is internal competition in the LDK, there is always a celebration, today we do not feel like a celebration, we have started a process of overthrow, dismissal, I consider it the least proud point of the LDK in its 37-year history, but I am very grateful that our membership managed to show a clean slate once again," he said.

He further said that today's Assembly was unnecessary, just as it has been unnecessary for the party to be a topic for several months now.

"This Assembly has been untimely and useless for the LDK because it has kept us on the topic for several months without any reason. I express my full support, sympathy and regret because party politics often disappoints them, but the current result is a confirmation of what we stand for, above all it is an obligation of the LDK's unity, reform at the same time and the final contribution of our party to the institutional stability of the Republic. The seats are temporary, they come and go, but the LDK has a much greater mission to provide stability to Kosovo", Abdixhiku emphasized.

The leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, has said that anyone who has been involved with righteous convictions in the process of his dismissal can understand it.

But, he said from what he saw from the wiretaps, if state mechanisms were used to disrupt the LDK, then there will be responsibility. He also warned the mayor of Pristina, Përparim Rama.

"All those involved in this matter have made a serious mistake. If Mr. Rama has been involved in this matter, he has made a serious mistake. And the LDK membership does not forgive this," Abdixhiku said.

Lutfi Haziri, vice president of the Democratic League of Kosovo, has announced that starting tomorrow there will be actions within the framework of discussions for cooperation with Vetëvendosje for the formation of institutions.

In a statement to the media after the party's Assembly, Haziri said that Abdixhiku, after being reconfirmed as party chairman, "will tomorrow restore the authorization for the second request, which is equally important, for cooperation and ultimately breaking this political deadlock that Kosovo has entered."

He said that the LDK "will engage in representing the interests of the Republic, the citizens and the LDK."

"From tomorrow onwards, the fulfillment of the second request must be handled in the same way," he said.

Asked about a possible co-government with VV, Haziri said that it is about cooperation "on three principles."

"Agreement for all or nothing; second criterion state agenda, sectoral policies, government programs and third division of responsibilities in accordance with the first two," he concluded.

Abdixhiku was reconfirmed as the leader of the LDK today. Before this Assembly, he had held a meeting with the leader of Vetëvendosje, Albin Kurti, on the formation of institutions. KOHA had reported that an agreement in principle had been reached between the two leaders. But negotiations were suspended after the Assembly initiated the dismissal of Abdixhiku from the LDK.

The delegate of the Democratic League of Kosovo and former minister Fatmir Rexhepi has said that he believes there should be a coalition between the LDK and the Vetëvendosje Movement.

"The order is to close this topic. It falls to me, it should be a coalition. It is not up to me. As a delegate, I have an opinion. It is in the interest of the country to provide a solution. LDK and Vetëvendosje should find a compromise for the president and the government and stabilize the situation. If they want, they have the numbers... It is the order of the house, the situation demands that we get in order and create unity of action that provides a fair solution to all Kosovo's issues. The entire people are waiting. There is no need to test anyone anymore, there is no other solution," said Rexhepi.

LIVE - Abdixhiku: Today is not an easy day

Lumir Abdixhiku has been reconfirmed as the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo. The fourth leader in the history of the oldest party in Kosovo, he survived the initiative to dismiss him on Thursday.

About 330 delegates participated in today's Assembly. The number of votes is currently unclear. Some delegates said that 170 were against the dismissal, while another group said there were 169 votes against the dismissal. The votes in favor of the dismissal were reported to be between 152 and 154.

This Assembly was convened after the June 7 elections. LDK again came third. At the initiative of the delegates, it was emphasized that Abdixhiku has failed as president. And Abdixhiku accused those who launched the initiative for his dismissal of sabotage.

After the June 7 elections, Abdixhiku met with Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti about the formation of institutions. KOHA has learned from sources that there was an agreement in principle. However, negotiations were suspended at the invitation of this Assembly.

Abdixhiku has been the leader of the LDK since 2021. At that time, Isa Mustafa resigned and Lumir Abdixhiku was elected as the leader of the party.

In the February 9, 2025 elections, the LDK increased to 18 percent, but remained in third place. After the early elections of December 28, the result fell to 13 percent. Abdixhiku offered to resign, but the delegates refused to accept it and confirmed him as the head of the party.

In the June 7 elections, the party again came in third, with 16.7 percent of the vote. Abdixhiku called the result a success. But the LDK branches in Peja, Lipjan and the Second Branch in Pristina demanded his resignation.

After this request was rejected, in early July, the collection of signatures for the call for an extraordinary Assembly began.

Some of the party's most voted figures, such as Hykmete Bajrami and Avdullah Hoti, have openly come out against him.

The LDK will have a regular Assembly next year.

The history of traumas of the oldest party in Kosovo, the LDK

Once the dominant political force in Kosovo, with almost half of the citizens' votes, the Democratic League is today trying to find a way to restore its former weight on the political scene.
The party, founded 37 years ago and led by former President Ibrahim Rugova for a decade and a half, is holding an extraordinary assembly on Thursday, where delegates will decide whether Lumir Abdixhiku will be dismissed or continue to lead the party.

Regardless of the outcome, the constitutive session of the assembly will be held on August 6. In the event of the election of the speaker of the parliament and the 5 vice-speakers, the 60-day deadline for the election of the president begins, which in the absence of consensus could lead the country to new elections.

Abdixhiku: Wrong initiative, I do not hold saboteurs responsible

LDK Assembly Begins, Abdixhiku: Wrong Initiative

"A wrong initiative, out of place and out of time," said LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku about the Assembly convened today, with the only item on the agenda for his dismissal.

He said that he considers it such "because it comes in a one-sided manner, sensitive for the country, and defining for our party."

According to him, this initiative is untimely because it comes just a few months after the Extraordinary Assembly and just before the Regular Assembly.

Abdixhiku said he feels sorry for some party members, who according to him sabotaged the party at its most important time.

"When participation in the General Council, in the Collegium of branches, in the party campaign is refused and after it responsibility is demanded, I reject this logic. I only feel regret and in this I have to preserve my dignity. I cannot hold someone responsible who refuses participation in the party bodies, who refuses the most important battle we can have while rubbing their hands for a bad result to start once again, for the umpteenth time, the same refrain. I hold the responsibility only to the member, the delegate who was in the field", he said.

After Abdixhiku's speech, the Assembly continues behind closed doors. The only item on the agenda is his dismissal.

The leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, said that usually the party's Assemblies are seen as a celebration. However, he says that he neither feels nor sees today's party Assembly as a celebration.

"I want to say with great regret that I neither feel nor see this Assembly as a celebration. Rest assured that our membership, deeply hurt, neither sees nor feels it. For the first time in our 37-year history, we are gathering not to elect but to overthrow. This is why the LDK has gathered today, to overthrow," Abdixhiku.

He said that regardless of the result, "when the overthrow is the goal of the house of freedom, independence and democracy, when in the overthrow and around the overthrow, attempts are made to reduce this house, then LDK will not emerge stronger, nor more organized, nor more united."

Abdixhiku: Today is not an easy day

LDK Chairman Lumir Abdixhiku described the extraordinary assembly called at the request of delegates for his dismissal as a difficult day.

"It's not easy for me. Not because of the chair, but because it's hard to stand in front of people you've walked with for so long, and what brought us together today is not what we want to build together, but the demand to overthrow one of us," he said.

In his speech at the opening of the Assembly, Abdixhiku said that he knew that this function was not guaranteed forever.

When he said that he was neither perfect nor wrong, Abdixhiku stated that he had thought about the LDK before himself.

Ahmeti mentioned that in January he had resigned from the position of party secretary, as well as from the position of chairman of the LDK branch in Lipjan.

Let's see today's Assembly whether it will strengthen our idea to reflect on the election results," said Ahmeti.

Shortly before the start of the Extraordinary Assembly of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Ilir Ferati, the Secretary General of the LDK, said that this assembly will have only one item on the agenda.

He assessed that the LDK is showing itself as a home for democratic and political debate, while saying that the secret ballot proves democratic rights.

"The best exercise of a democratic right is expected to take place, a secret vote in relation to the motion raised for dismissal by the initiating delegates, who have fulfilled the statutory requirement to call such an Assembly, which is in record time by the party leadership, respecting the statutory norms, without consuming the entire 60-day deadline, but on the 15th day the Assembly is already being held. All technical arrangements have already been completed. Now we are waiting from 6 o'clock for the delegates to arrive and for the Assembly to carry out its work. The Assembly is being held with one item on the agenda, as the initiators and signatories of the request have constructed," he said.

Ferati expects the Assembly to proceed democratically.

Asked whether there will be more votes for or against, Ferati avoided the question, saying that his positions are clear.

The Democratic League of Kosovo is holding an extraordinary assembly today. 355 delegates will decide by vote whether Lumir Abdixhiku will continue to lead the party or be dismissed.

Sadiku: LDK must be a vocal and courageous opposition to the VV government

Ermal Sadiku

Ermal Sadiku, an elected MP from the Democratic League of Kosovo, has called for his party to remain in opposition to the Vetëvendosje government, regardless of who will lead the LDK from today.

The party will meet starting at 18:00 PM to decide whether current chairman Lumir Abdixhiku will be dismissed or continue as chairman, following his failure in the June 7 elections.

Sadiku called for delegates to vote according to their personal beliefs and the visions presented. However, he called for the LDK to remain in opposition.

"I will respect and support any leadership that emerges from this Assembly, because it will be the result of a democratic process. But I have a clear request for anyone who will take on the responsibility of leading the party: LDK must be a vocal, courageous and proactive opposition to the Vetvendosje government. Not for personal reasons, nor for party interests, but because I sincerely believe that this government has been harmful to our country," he wrote on Facebook, listing 14 points in which, according to him, VV has failed.

Sadiku said that the LDK should unite to offer Kosovo a better alternative and challenge the VV government.

"Maybe the strategy is co-governance, to show citizens that we know and can do better. Maybe the strategy is a much more active, more vocal and closer to the citizens opposition. Maybe the path is completely different. But, regardless of the strategy, first we must accept the diagnosis. We must understand where Kosovo's problem lies today. Not because I or anyone else says so, BUT BECAUSE FACTS MUST BE THE FOUNDATION ON WHICH WE BUILD OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE", he concluded.

The LDK will hold an extraordinary Assembly following the request of some delegates for the dismissal of President Lumir Abdixhiku, after the June 7 elections. Before this Assembly, Abdixhiku met with the President of Vetëvendosje, Albin Kurti, to discuss the formation of institutions. KOHA had reported on sources that an agreement in principle had been reached. However, negotiations were suspended until the end of the Assembly.

The Mayor of Pristina, Përparim Rama, has accused Vetëvendosje of putting into action what he called a propaganda machine against him, precisely on the day of the Assembly of the Democratic League of Kosovo.

"The entire Vetëvendosje propaganda machinery is in action against me, today on the day of the LDK assembly! Interesting!" Rama wrote on Facebook.

During the day, Vetëvendosje submitted a criminal complaint to the Special Prosecution Office against Rama and senior officials in his cabinet, alleging that they were involved in illegal legalizations of buildings.

The basis for this, according to VV, was an anonymous tip that was received via email by a group of assembly members days ago.

Today, the LDK will hold an extraordinary assembly following the request of some delegates for the dismissal of chairman Lumir Abdixhiku, following the June 7 elections.

Rama, who has won two elections in Pristina under the LDK banner, has been mentioned by various actors as a figure who could become party leader after Abdixhiku.

"Democracy in action" has been called the extraordinary Assembly of the Democratic League of Kosovo by the elected MP of this party, Avdullah Hoti. He said that the convening of the Assembly shows that the party has the "statutory and democratic mechanisms to reflect, to consolidate and to become stronger."

Hoti emphasized that the LDK will emerge from this assembly united, adding that everyone will submit to the will of the Assembly today.

"The Assembly will be held in a democratic spirit, of open debate and respect for each other. In this Assembly, the winner will be the LDK. Because the Assembly is not against anyone. The Assembly has been called to discuss and decide on the future of the LDK. We will all submit to the will of the Assembly, without exception. We will emerge from the Assembly united for the future of the LDK and the Republic of Kosovo," he wrote on Facebook.

According to Hoti, the Assembly to be held this afternoon will return the LDK as the main political force.

"Only a strong LDK can serve Kosovo. A weak LDK is only in the interest of political opponents, who want a political scene without alternatives."
