On Sunday evening, specifically in Serbia's early parliamentary elections, Aleksandar Vučić, who resigned from the post of president to run for prime minister, was defeated by the Student List after 12 years in power.

He took over the leadership of the Government of Serbia in April 2014, and was elected president in May 2017. In the 2022 presidential elections, Vučić secured a second term in office.

During this period, he and the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) have been dominant factors in the country's politics. Vučić has played a key role in determining domestic policies, relations with the European Union, and Serbia's relationship with Kosovo. In relation to Kosovo, Vučić has been one of the main actors in the dialogue mediated by the European Union.

On September 27, 2026, Vučić resigned from the post of president, after two terms in office.

His governance has been accompanied by significant electoral support for the SNS, but also by criticism from international organizations and observers regarding electoral competition, media freedom, and the concentration of power.

Thus, his period at the head of executive power, first as prime minister and then as president, amounts to about 12 years.

As president, Vučić served for 9 years, from 2017 to 2026.
