German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Germany will need to do a better job of cracking down on "irregular migration" and deporting those who are not legal residents.
Scholz, however, stressed that Germany will continue to offer protection to Ukrainians fleeing Russia's war, the AP reported.
"Our responsibility in the face of this terrible war also includes providing protection to Ukrainians in the EU."
Over 1 million Ukrainians have found refuge in Germany. In addition, over 200,000 people from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey applied for asylum in 2022.
Local communities have been saying for months that they are struggling to accommodate the newcomers and have asked the government for accommodation assistance.
Scholz stated that Germany should speed up the deportation of those whose asylum applications are rejected.
