United surprise City, win the FA Cup for the 13th time

- 17:56 - Manchester United won the FA Cup after defeating the reigning champion, Manchester City, 2:1 in the final held on Saturday.

The final took place at the "Wembley" stadium, while the "red devils" lifted the trophy at the end.

It was the first trophy of United's dismal season that halted the dominance of City, who were chasing England's two major trophies for the second time in a row.

With this triumph, United has qualified for the Europa League for the next season.

Both these teams also played in the final of the FA Cup in the last edition.

City had won that final with the result 2:1.

Alejandro Garnacho opened the series of goals in this encounter in the 30th minute, after a mistake by Croatian defender Joshko Guardiol and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

Kobbie Mainoo then added another goal in the 39th minute. The celebration was huge in the stadium, and especially for coach Erik ten Hag, whose job in charge of United is in danger due to heavy criticism due to the negative results.

United controlled the game in the first half, but City came back with a superb performance in the second half and scored through substitute Jeremy Doku in the 87th minute.

Erling Haaland had a chance to score when he shot the crossbar, while Kyle Walker had another chance, but Andre Onana was not defeated. Julian Alvarez also missed the chance.

It is United's 13th FA Cup trophy. Arsenal holds the record with 14 trophies.

For coach Ten Hag, it is the second trophy won with Manchester United, after the success achieved in the last edition in the League Cup.

The players and staff of the team embraced him after the final whistle, having managed to win something in a very difficult season.

There is speculation about his future that he could be sacked, despite the trophy won. United ended their weakest season in 34 years.

"It's not about me, it's about the team and winning the cup," said Ten Hag before the start of the duel.

It was a completely different story for City. After becoming the first team to win the championship four times in a row, it was aimed to make it two in a row to win the two major trophies in England. City's parade to Manchester will take place on Monday, for the league's historic celebration, but the FA Cup trophy will not be included.

City dominated possession in the first half, but United were more dangerous in attack and took the lead first.

Thanks to the mistake made by the opponents, United unlocked the challenge and then scored another goal. City struggled until the last minutes to equalize the score, but failed to score more than one goal.

Mainoo, one of the most promising players in this team, was happy for this triumph.

"It has been a season of ups and downs. This was the only thing for which we looked for money", said Mainoo. "We knew we had to be together. The preparations for this match have been excellent. We have shown that we can be competitors and win matches", said Mainoo.
