Mexico's COVID-19 death toll 60 percent higher than originally reported

Mexico has published revised figures, which show that deaths caused by COVID-19 in this country are 60 percent higher than previously reported, reports the BBC.

More than 321 people are believed to have died from COVID-19 in Mexico since the start of the pandemic.

With the revised figures, Mexico is now the second country, after the USA, in terms of the number of deaths from COVID-19.

Mexico's president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has faced criticism for his handling of the pandemic.

The opposition criticized him for underestimating the seriousness of the pandemic and also blamed him for delays in the vaccination program.

In the report with revised figures published by the Ministry of Health of Mexico, it is shown that by the end of the sixth week of 2021 the total number of deaths that have been caused as a result of COVID-19 was 294.287, a figure significantly higher than that 182.301 as reported earlier.
