Russia will not cut gas supplies to Europe from Friday

Russia has announced that it will not cut gas exports to Europe from Friday to those countries that do not pay in Russian rubles, as foreseen by the latest decision of the president, Vladimir Putin, signed the day before.

Putin signed a decree on Thursday requiring buyers to pay in rubles through bank accounts in Russia starting Friday, the BBC reports.

However, the Kremlin stated on Friday that this will not affect the deliveries that were already paid.

"Does this mean that if there is no confirmation in rubles, then gas supplies will be cut off from April 1? No, no, and it does not follow from the decree," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

Meanwhile, the EU has stated that it is in talks with the energy companies on how to pay for the gas.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Western countries have imposed sanctions on Russian companies and individuals.

Unlike the US and Canada, the EU has not imposed bans on Russian oil or gas, as its member states are heavily dependent on it.

Russia supplies the European Union with about 40% of imported gas and 30% of oil, which are paid mainly in euros and dollars.
