Lebanon's Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, has announced that he has resigned following protests that have gripped the country over the past two weeks.
Hariri said that the country had reached a point of blockade, and that a shake-up was needed in order to end the crisis.
The protests began against government plans to tax WhatsApp calls, but quickly expanded to protest political corruption and the economic crisis. According to the protesters, the prime minister manipulated old promises and that they would not stop standing on the streets until the political elite resigned.
Lebanon has one of the highest levels of debt in the world.
The protests have caused banks, schools, universities and many other institutions to be closed for 10 days.
Hariri said he would send his resignation, and that of the government, to the president, and called on all Lebanese to uphold civil peace.
