Germany will authorize Poland to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing well-informed sources. German leaders are expected to give Poland permission to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine on Wednesday. These are modern German-made tanks, the re-export of which requires German approval.
The German government confirmed today that it had received Poland's request for the delivery of German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Germany is still resisting the idea of sending tanks, which is supported by Poland, the US and several other NATO members.
Tensions over the deployment of Leopard 2s to Ukraine have escalated in a week-long standoff between German and Polish leaders, with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki accusing Germany of "wasting time" by not making a decision.
"We are preparing a decision, it will arrive very soon", said the German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius during today's joint press conference with the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg. He added that, "in case of a positive decision, Germany will act very quickly".
The Wall Street Journal has reported that Germany has changed its mind after an agreement between US President Joe Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It is said that the US will also send the powerful Abrams tanks later.
