The top US infectious disease expert, Anthony Fauci, said the United States could bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control early next year if more people are vaccinated.

His statement was made on August 24, a day after the federal government gave full approval to the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, health adviser to US President Joe Biden, said full approval for the Pfizer/BioNtech vaccine by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) paves the way for more people to be vaccinated.

"I would like to urge people who are not vaccinated to understand that we have the ability to shorten the timeline to get to the end of this pandemic," Fauci said during a news conference.

Full approval for Moderna's vaccine could come within this week, he added.

US officials also urged private employers and state and local governments to require their employees to get vaccinated.

The US military, some businesses, universities and other organizations have started to make vaccination mandatory.

On August 24th more large US employers announced that they will require workers to be vaccinated.

While President Biden, on August 24, asked the private sector and local governments to order their employees to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

"If you are a business leader, nonprofit leader, state or local leader who has been waiting for full FDA approval to seek vaccination, I urge you to do so now," Biden said.

Pfizer/BioNTech has been approved for emergency use since December.

Since then, over 204 million people in the US alone have received this vaccine.
