Zejnullahu: We expect up to 30 percent lower wheat yield than last year

Bashkim Zejnullahu from the Association of Millers of Kosovo has said that the wheat yield is low and the quality is not satisfactory. He said that farmers are not satisfied and that this year, compared to last year, they expect up to 30 percent less yield.

Zejnullahu said that there are many factors that have influenced the quality of wheat. He said that there was a lot of drought.

According to him, another factor is the cost of buying artificial fertilizers, where their price has increased by 200 percent.

"Subsidies are long overdue. With subsidies, we are the best in the region. The cost has increased too much. Within the territory of Kosovo, we have quality changes depending on the territory. We still haven't been able to say that the wheat lacks any element because the harvesting and threshing have just started. We are dependent on imports and we have to look for wheat improvers", he said.

He said that even in the region, very good qualities of wheat are not produced.

According to him, Ukraine and Russia have much better quality wheat than the entire Balkans.

Zejnullah said that this year has been very challenging, but according to him, the millers have done very well.

"Since March, flour in Kosovo has been the cheapest in the region. Now that we have the wheat in hand, we can talk about the quantity and quality of the wheat. We expect up to 30 percent less wheat yield this year compared to last year," he said.
