The latest study of the European Environment Agency ranks Albanian beaches among the last in Europe in terms of water quality.
For 2017, the rating "excellent" is given to 54.9% of Albanian beaches with water of an indisputable quality, which means that in the ranking of this agency, Albania manages to leave only Romania and Bulgaria behind, reports Tch.
Among the best are Malta, Cyprus and Greece. 84% is the level of areas with water of a quality that can be considered sufficient and 11,8% those with impure water. The conclusions of the study are also accompanied by explanatory graphics and a map where the most polluted beaches that receive a poor rating are marked in red, the beaches that receive an excellent rating in blue, and those that reach sufficient in green.
The problematic beaches in red on the map correspond to some areas in Durres, Vlora and Saranda. The 12 beaches listed in the report as having unsatisfactory water quality are, however, one less than in 2016 and significant improvements are noted compared to 2015.
Water monitoring is carried out by taking a sample before the start of the summer season and after that at least 4 samples during the period when the beaches are filled with vacationers.
