Graffiti with the name of war criminal Ratko Mladic appears in Bujanovac, Albanian politicians react

Graffiti in the center of Bujanovac

Graffiti with the name of war criminal Ratko Mladic has appeared in the center of Bujanovac. Presevo Valley politician Ragmi Mustafi has called the graffiti unacceptable and a threat to security and coexistence.

Mustafi, who is an advisor to Kosovo's acting deputy prime minister, Besnik Bislimi, said that graffiti has appeared in the center of Bujanovac.

“In a city with an Albanian majority, in 2025, to publicly display the name of the general convicted of genocide in Srebrenica, along with nationalist and hateful symbols, is clear evidence of the collapse of public security and institutional impunity. In August, the billboard of Commander Lleshi, a beloved figure for the Albanians of the Valley, was broken, on the anniversary of his fall. No reaction from the authorities. Neither police. Nor institutional. Previously, graffiti calling for the murder of Albanians had been displayed twice at the Health Center. Again silence. Today, we have this: “RATKO MLADIĆ” in red in the city center. We know this style well: nationalism, provocation and deliberate intimidation of Albanians in their own country,” Mustafi wrote on Facebook. “Where “multiethnicity” is building the new reality. Systematic Serbization of Bujanovac”

He said that the systematic Serbization of Bujanovac is happening with more sophisticated means.

"This does not happen with open violence, but with more sophisticated means. With letters that slander against Albanians, with appointments that exclude Albanians, with the exclusion of Albanian national symbols and figures, with the punishment of those who dare to speak (PS Do you of the APN that tapestry of mine, you have to beg. You will only understand later, unfortunately," Mustafi wrote.

And the mayor of Presheva, Ardita Sinani, said that Serbia is remaining silent in the face of acts of hatred and provocation. She said that silence is indirect incitement, and makes the blow to Albanians and their security more severe.

"In Bujanovac, in 2025, Albanians are facing a painful reality: the name of a general convicted of genocide is publicly displayed in the city center, accompanied by symbols of extreme nationalism. This is not just vandalism - it is a frightening message, directed at the Albanian majority. These are not random actions. Commander Lleshi's billboard was broken, graffiti was written calling for the murder of Albanians in front of the Health House, and everything went without reaction. Today, Mladic's name on the city walls is a continuation of the same strategy: provocation, belittling and institutional silence. This process is happening with disguised means: with slander against Albanians, with exclusion from decision-making, with the removal of our national symbols and figures. It is a deliberate damage to interethnic relations," she wrote on Facebook.

And the only Albanian MP in Serbia, Shaip Kamberi, said that the writing of Mladic's name in Bujanovac is a consequence of the glorification of war criminals by the Government in Belgrade.

"This is not only an insult to the victims of war, but also a dangerous attempt to impose crime as a value and to normalize evil. Any glorification of crime is an act against peace, against justice and against the future of society," he wrote.
