Hamza on the session for the president: Constitutional coup

Bedri Hamza

The leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, has said that starting the presidential vote without having 2/3 of the deputies present in the Assembly hall is a "constitutional coup".

In today's session, the first round of voting was conducted with only 64 participating deputies. Feride Rushiti received 63 votes, and one was declared invalid. Hatixhe Hoxha did not receive any votes. The session was postponed until tomorrow at 10:00.

"Tonight, the frivolity, the irresponsibility has reached its peak. This is a constitutional coup. A lot of blood, a lot of effort, a lot of sacrifice and a lot of suffering have been shed so that we have freedom and the Constitution. We have repeatedly said that for us, the decisions of the Constitutional Court are respected even when we may have a comment, because they are still decisions that are respected. Tonight, the Constitution of Kosovo has already been violated. The issue of electing the president or president in an unconstitutional manner has entered the voting procedure and this practice must be stopped in order to preserve political stability and the country's institutions, because otherwise there is a danger and this danger is the Vetëvendosje Movement and Albin Kurti. I do not want to believe that a situation will be created where the country could descend into anarchy," said Hamza.

He said that one cannot go to the second round without passing the first round.

"There must be 80 deputies in the hall present and voting for the first round to be completed, the same is required for the second round. You cannot go to the second round without passing the first round. How frivolous and irresponsible they are, they call the session at 20:30 and they invite us at 20:25. We have an invitation for tomorrow for a session at 10:00, but we consider that the conditions have not been met to go to the second round. I want to believe that these people will not continue further," said Hamza.
