Doctors at the Main Center for Family Medicine (MCFM) in Pristina have called on citizens to get vaccinated against the seasonal flu, after saying that a slight increase in new cases has been identified recently.
Despite the recent cases, doctors have emphasized that the flu situation is not of worrying proportions.
Vjollca Zeqiri, who is the director of the QKMF in Pristina, has announced that around 8,600 citizens have been vaccinated against the flu since October 1st.
"Most are elderly, meaning 60 and over, but we also have other age groups, but the majority are elderly. We still have the vaccine. It would be best to vaccinate all citizens now, those who have indications for vaccination, however, vaccination continues until the other months - March, April, May," she emphasized.
Regarding the new cases in the group, Zeqiri said that they are mainly caused by three types of viruses - type A, type B and C. She warned that types A and B can cause more severe forms of the disease, which most often affect people with chronic diseases, the elderly, pregnant women and children between the ages of two and five.
"Types A, A and B cause more severe forms of the disease and cause symptoms that can range from mild to moderate and more severe. Influenza mainly causes symptoms... it attacks the upper respiratory tract, causing sneezing, coughing, fever, temperature," she said.
Zeqiri has also listed the complications that these types of viruses can cause.

"The complications that can occur as a result of the influenza virus are... starting from pneumonia that is life-threatening, then inflammation of the membranes of the brain, inflammation of the membranes of the heart, then inflammation of myositis," she warned.
In addition to vaccination, Zeriqi has called on citizens to pay special attention to personal hygiene, as he said that the virus spreads very easily through close contact.
Zeqiri also warned citizens not to use antibiotics without a medical prescription, as he informed that they only act against bacteria and not against viral infections, and that their use causes harmful side effects.
