Technology that connects to the brain

People are investing more time and money in personal technology, such as magnifiers, watches and other smart devices. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased our use of technology and increased our reliance on social connections, entertainment, and educational experiences. As we spend more time at home, many of us are using technology to liven up our reality. Devices, such as headphones, watches, rings and bracelets, have data and information about our lives. As this technology becomes ever more common in our lives, there is an even more intimate connection on the horizon: the brain-computer connection.

BCI technology

The technology known as BCI can be connected to the human brain either internally or externally. It can read brain activity and turn this activity into information. It can even relay this information back to the brain. BCI has the potential to bring human intelligence back to superhuman levels. That's good for technologists and performers, but there's a question about it: Are we, our businesses, and our technology systems ready to embrace this change?

BCI is divided into two categories: invasive and non-invasive. It is invasive when it is placed inside the brain and connects small electrodes to neurons in order to measure its activity. One of his connections needs surgical intervention. Doctors drill into the skull to place the device. High-precision robots must connect microscopic electrodes to neurons. Invasive BCI records data better and can be placed in different parts of the brain. This technology has had effects in the treatment of back injuries, the control of prosthetic limbs and the treatment of depression. Non-invasive BCI does not require surgical intervention, but relies on noisy signals coming from the electroencephalogram (EEG) and ultraviolet devices placed on the head. Artificial intelligence is used to isolate the brain signals that the BCI device can pick up.

The technology has created advantages in the field of medicine and has been funded by the US Department of Defense through the DARPA project. This project works through BCI that aims to help the body heal independently and recover from injuries.

Many companies are working to measure brain activity for many uses, from gaming to stress reduction. Even Facebook has started developing a BCI implant that can read brain activity and decode it based on words.

Recently, there is a lot of noise about "Neuralink", Elon Musk's BCI company. "Neuralink" demonstrated the placement of a device that reads and writes information in the pig's brain. Many neurologists didn't buy into the company's claims when it came to advancing neuroscience. While electrode technology has become more advanced, there has been much discussion about how the company should elucidate brain activity. One of the main goals of the demonstration was to attract talent to Neuralink and increase BCI's interest in advanced neuroscience. Musk has promised that "Neuralink" will start with human testing by the end of 2020. The main goal was to cure people who have neurological disorders.

The evolution of BCI

In the distant future, if BCI is successful in reading and writing information to the brain and if people adapt to the technology, we will be able to experience wonderful things. Think of it as having a telepathic conversation with our loved ones, instant access to computing power, and replaying our dream memories. These scenes are inspiring the work of researchers, technologists and futurists. In her book Artificial You, researcher and futurist Susan Schneider envisions a "design center of the mind"
