Spanish police arrest a British man suspected of hacking Twitter accounts

Spanish police have arrested a 22-year-old British citizen in connection with the hacking of 130 Twitter accounts, including those of Elon Musk, Barack Obama and Kanye West.

Hacked accounts had written to followers, encouraging them to join a Bitcoin scam, in July last year.

Accused of hacking both TikTok and Snapchat, Joseph O'Connor also faces other charges including three counts of conspiracy to knowingly access a computer without authorization and obtaining information from a protected computer.

The case is being investigated by the FBI, assisted by the Internal Revenue Service's Cybercrime Criminal Investigation Unit and the United States Secret Service.

Authorities have initially charged three people in connection with the offence, a 19-year-old from Bognor Regis, a teenager and a 22-year-old from Florida.

Hackers had taken over the accounts of public figures and sent a series of messages asking followers to transfer cryptocurrencies to a special Bitcoin wallet to get double the money in return.
