Internet users have been advised to change their passwords and improve their digital security after researchers claimed to have uncovered a huge trove of information - 16 billion login details - potentially accessible to cybercriminals.

Researchers at Cybernews said they found 30 datasets filled with credentials collected by suspicious software known as "infostealers."

The researchers added that the data was only briefly exposed, but amounted to 16 billion login details - it is not known exactly how many people's accounts may have been exposed, The Guardian reported.

"Cybernews" said the credentials could provide access to services including Facebook, Apple and Google.

Experts have emphasized the need to update passwords regularly and take stronger security measures such as using multiple-factor authentication to open an account – or combining a password with another form of verification such as a code sent to your phone.
