South Korea fines Meta $15 million for illegal data collection

Korea

South Korea's privacy watchdog has fined social networking company Meta $15 million for illegally collecting sensitive personal information from Facebook users.

This follows a series of penalties against Meta by South Korean authorities in recent years as they tighten measures on how companies handle personal information.

South Korea's Information Protection Commission after a four-year investigation concluded that Meta illegally collected sensitive data on about 4 Facebook users, including religion, political views and sexual orientation.

It said the company shared the data of about 4,000 users.
