Hackers gain access to the data of more than 500 million Facebook users

The information of more than 500 million Facebook users has become accessible to hackers, it has been announced.

The exposed data already includes the personal information of more than 533 million Facebook users from 106 different countries, writes The Independent, Koha.net reports. Among the data are phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, and in some cases even email addresses of users.

The exposure of the personal information of the users of the social network was made known by an anonymous user, while it was later discovered by the cyber crime intelligence company "Hudson Rock".

Facebook has stated that the data is more than two years old and that it stemmed from a problem that was fixed in 2019.

However, Alon Gal, head of the technology office at "Hudson Rock" has said that the data enables hackers to create "advantages" in relation to the social network.

"Such a large database, which contains information such as phone numbers of many Facebook users, would allow "bad actors" to take advantage of the data to carry out cyber attacks," said Gal.

He added that Facebook needs to identify users affected by this exposure so they can be alert for any possible fraud.

This is not the first time that the security of Facebook users' data has been called into question.
