A court in the US has ruled that the technology giant Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly over internet searches and related advertising, "BBC" reports.

Google was sued by the Department of Justice in 2020 over its control of about 90 percent of the online search market.

US judge Amit Mehta has said Google paid billions to ensure it was the default search engine on smartphones and browsers.

Monday's ruling could change the way tech giants do business.
