LeBron James is the first player to reach 40 points in the NBA

LeBron James has become the first player in NBA history to reach 40 points during the regular season.

The 39-year-old James scored 26 points in Saturday night's 124-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

James needed just seven points to reach the 40-point mark during the NBA regular season.

"To be the first player to do something, it's pretty cool," James said, reports the BBC.

James completed his historic double 10 minutes and 39 seconds before the end of the second quarter. The Lakers were leading 37:32 at that point. The referee called a break, while there was a standing ovation for James.

James broke the NBA scoring record in February 2023, surpassing Karem Abdul-Jabbar's record of 38 points.

James said he doesn't know if any other player can ever reach 40 points.
