The Skiing Federation of Kosovo (FSK) has canceled several competitions in the past years, due to the lack of snow in the skiing centers in Kosovo.
KSF on Sunday canceled the first race of this season, because of the weather conditions. Now not for lack of snow, but for the "big snow" that has recently fallen in the country.
On Sunday, it was planned to hold the "Hajrush Demaj" Memorial Cup for the new categories in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines. But this race has been postponed to another date.
"Hajrush Demaj Cup" is the first competition in the KSK calendar for this winter.
"After the finding of the technical delegate on the ground and due to the conditions worsened by the snowfall, in the emergency meeting held by the Organizing Council of the race, it was unanimously decided that the race scheduled for today will be postponed until further notice," he writes. in the notification of the KSF.
The president of the Skiing Federation, Milaim Kelmendi, told KOHEN on Sunday that he stayed until late at the skiing center in Brod. And it has shown that it was impossible for the ski track to be prepared for the competition, although they tried to do so.
"As soon as we returned from Bhjeshka. We canceled the race because the competitors are small and new snow has fallen, 60 centimeters. Competitors are in the U8 to U16 age group. They are all children. The snow started falling around 18:00 or 19:00 on Saturday evening and has not stopped so far. They informed me from above that there is still snowfall, somewhere 60-70 centimeters of new snow", Kelmendi stated.
He emphasized that they did not want to risk holding the race, to avoid possible injuries to the children. But he said that this race can be held next week.
"Actually, we don't dare to let any child go without crushing the snow well because these are small. The chances of injury in loose snow are greater. We tried to compact it but it was fine snow and it just piled up and ruined the entire track. So we have postponed the race to another date. The new snow has to stay a little, otherwise it's a problem. These are small and we have to level the track for them, otherwise there is a possibility of injuries".
This competition was scheduled to be held in Bogë, Peja. However, according to Kelmendi, disputes between the ski lift owner and the private property owners in that ski center have caused the competition to be moved to Brod, Dragash.
Last year, several skiing events were canceled in Kosovo, due to the lack of snow.
KOHA wrote on January 30 of last year that two races were canceled due to the lack of snow, as the track did not meet the criteria. They were developed later. There have been such troubles in previous years as well. And this, of course, has also harmed the contestants.
"Even this year, I believe that we will finish all the competitions. We have a lot of snow, over a meter and a half of snow. But we have to wait until the rain stops and start again with this race. In this calendar, we have the possibility to change it. The board has the power to change it. Maybe next week we can decide to hold it again, normally if the conditions are right for the race", declared Milaim Kelmendi.
On January 4th and 5th, in all skiing centers, it is planned to hold the "Mass action 'All in the snow'", for all categories. However, there is no announcement on the official website of the KSF that this activity was held.
On February 22 and 23 in Brod, the "Championship of Kosovo" in the Young Categories and the "Arxena Cup" and the "Championship of Kosovo" for adults should be organized.
On March 15 and 16 in Brod is the "International FIS Competition" for the new categories and at the end of March, the same competition for the old categories.
The "Gjeravica Cup", which is not scored, is planned to be held in Deçan, in March and April for all categories. All these activities are foreseen in the official calendar. It remains to be seen which ones will be retained.
