Gut-Behrami wins sixth Super-G title

Lara Gut-Bahrami

Olympic champion Lara Gut-Behrami showed all her potential to win the World Cup race in Sun Valley in the Super-G discipline of alpine skiing on Sunday.

She finished the race in 1 minute, 12 seconds, beating skiing legend Lindsey Vonn, 35. American Vonn finished the race 40 seconds behind.

Olympic gold medalist Gut-Behrami entered the race five points behind overall World Cup winner Federica Brignone, but emerged with her sixth Super-G title and third in a row. Valon Behrami's wife won the "small globe" of alpine skiing, which is awarded to winners in each discipline.

"It's just a very beautiful and extraordinary thing to win the 'sixth globe'. I'm proud. This takes a lot of energy because you have to compete for a long time. I've realized that without enjoying it, nothing works. I'm enjoying what I'm doing again. But to achieve success, you need a very good environment. Only then is it possible to stay on stage for a long time. Without a doubt, I wouldn't be here if I were alone," Gut-Behrami declared.

The Swiss skier emphasized that Sunday's race was one of the best she has ever done. For this reason, she was rewarded in the end with another triumph.

"I knew I had to do one of the best races. I felt confident. The course was very good and I adapted well. I didn't know if I would race like this and put in a performance like this."

Italian Brignone finished the race in third place, 1.33 seconds behind Gut-Behram.

In the overall standings of the Super-G discipline, Gut-Behrami came first, Brignone second and Soffia Goggia, also of Italy, finished third.

For skiing legend Vonn, the second-place finish in Sun Valley, USA, secured her second World Cup podium finish since March 15, 2018, when she finished third in the Super-G in Are, Sweden. Vonn came out of retirement this season after undergoing knee surgery.

It was Vonn's 138th career podium.

On Saturday, the "small globe" in the shooting discipline was won by Brignone.

Gut-Behrami will meet Brignone again on Tuesday in the giant slalom. Together they will try to close the 20-point gap on leader Alice Robinson.

The World Cup is a series of competitions in alpine skiing. It is the premier event in skiing.

Gut-Behrami has two overall titles, while in Super-G he won for the first time in 2014. He then triumphed in 2016, 2021, 2023 and 2024.
