The parade to celebrate Argentina's World Cup success was abruptly canceled on Tuesday as millions took to streets, highways and overpasses in a chaotic bid to catch a glimpse of the world title-winning team.
There were so many excited fans that the players were forced to abandon the open-top bus and board helicopters for a flyover of the capital, which the government called an air parade. This was announced by the news agency, AP.
"The world champions are flying in helicopters because it was impossible to continue on the ground due to the explosion of people's joy," wrote Gabriela Cerruti, spokeswoman for President Alberto Fernandez.
After flying over key points in the capital, Buenos Aires, the helicopters carrying the players have returned to the Federation's headquarters outside the city.
The head of the federation, Claudio Tapia, has blamed law enforcement for the change in plan.
The bus drove very slowly for four hours through the throngs of people before the ground parade was called off.
