The local public enterprise "Gjelbër" is engaged this day in pruning trees, cleaning plant debris and preparing surfaces for winter, with the aim of providing a green and healthy environment for the citizens of Pristina.

Gent Luzha from "Gjelbër" says that they are constantly taking care of the parks so that citizens have a greener environment to walk and relax.

"The Local Public Enterprise "Gjelbër" has an essential role in the preservation, development and maintenance of public green spaces in the Municipality of Prishtina. Its responsibilities include the maintenance of parks, squares, boulevards, flowerbeds, as well as the continuous care of trees, shrubs and ornamental vegetation. The main goal is to provide a clean, safe and aesthetically attractive environment for citizens. Pruning is a professional process that aims to maintain the health of trees, stimulate growth and form a balanced crown. It helps remove dry or diseased branches, improves air and light circulation in the crown, and prevents the risk of large branches falling during winds or rainfall. In urban spaces, pruning also has a safety and aesthetic function, to maintain the appearance and functionality of green areas", said Luzha.

According to Luzha, this is the most suitable period for pruning as the wood regenerates in a short period of time.

"The most appropriate time for pruning trees is during the vegetative dormancy period, usually from late winter to early spring, January - March, before flowering begins. During this period, damage to the plant is minimal and the tree regenerates the wound more quickly. If pruning is carried out out of season or with the wrong technique, it can cause stress to the plant, drying of branches, reduced vitality and susceptibility to diseases. Heavy pruning during the summer or flowering period can negatively affect the physiological processes of the plant," he added.

He says that pruning is never strong, even though citizens see it that way, but the cuts help the plant develop new branches.

“The frequency of pruning depends on the type of tree, its age and condition. In general, trees in the city are checked every year, while regenerative or formative pruning is done every 2–3 years. The goal is to maintain the crown, ensure safety and sustainable growth. Pruning that appears “strong” is often necessary for tree regeneration, especially in old or damaged specimens. In these cases, the intervention helps the plant develop new healthy branches and extend its life. Although they may visually seem drastic, these interventions are part of professional and planned maintenance,” he said.

Pruning is often also done for the safety of citizens when the plant is damaged and can easily break.

"Regular pruning improves the overall condition of the tree, promotes sustainable growth and prevents risks that can be caused by dry or broken branches. This increases the safety of citizens, especially on roads, parks and public spaces where attendance is high. "Green" professional teams use modern equipment such as electric saws, telescopic shears, protective helmets, safety belts, gloves and reflective clothing. During work, all safety standards are respected at height and in the vicinity of electrical or road infrastructure," he added.

After pruning, the waste is collected and reused as organic materials such as compost.

"Branches and wood waste are collected and transported to the company's Composting Center, where they are reprocessed into organic materials such as compost and mulch for later use in landscaping. This helps recycle natural resources and reduce waste. The "Green" company notifies the Municipality and local communities in advance of the areas where pruning will be carried out, through official channels, media and social networks. Citizens can contribute to the maintenance of trees by reporting damage, not damaging the bases of trees, not throwing waste near them and by cooperating with teams on the ground during interventions," he said.

Through the work of the "Green" team and cooperation with citizens, green spaces in Pristina not only preserve the beauty and health of trees, but also provide a safe, peaceful and healthy environment for everyone.
