It was with deep sadness that I received the news of the passing of my friend, distinguished intellectual and activist, Dr. Daut Dauti.
Dauti belonged to that generation of Albanian intellectuals who did not consider knowledge a personal privilege, but a responsibility to the homeland. He was a historian, lawyer, journalist and publicist, but, above all, he was a man dedicated to Kosovo and the Albanian cause.
In London, Dauti was one of the organizers of the referendum on Kosovo's independence, held at the home of Agron Loxha. He was also one of the founders of the Albanian club "Faik Konica", which for years served as an important center of cultural, intellectual and national activity of Albanians in Great Britain.
During the difficult years of the Kosovo War, in 1998–1999, he made an extraordinary contribution in London. With his speech, writing, connections and tireless commitment, Dauti worked to internationalize the Kosovo issue and to present the Albanian truth to the British public. At a time when Kosovo needed the voice of every Albanian, he was among the most conscientious, most argued and most committed voices.
Daut Dauti completed his studies at the Faculty of Law of the University of Prishtina, while he continued his postgraduate studies in London. At the University of Leeds, he completed his doctorate on the topic “British Foreign Policy and the Albanian Question 1876–1914”, bringing a valuable contribution to the study of Albanian-British relations and the diplomatic history of the Albanian question.
His doctoral thesis was published in Albanian in Skopje, and in English by the Bloomsbury publishing house in London. Through his research in British archives, Dauti brought to light important documents and evidence, enriching Albanian historiography with new sources, arguments and perspectives.

He was the author of several books and a large number of studies, articles and analyses. One of his books was promoted at the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in London by the distinguished British historian, Sir Noel Malcolm.
Dauti started his career in journalism early. He wrote for “Botën e Re”, the magazine “Zëri”, “Zërin javor” and other newspapers in Kosovo and Albania. From 1994 to 1999 he was a correspondent from London, reporting on one of the most crucial periods of our recent history. Later he also worked at the Institute for War and Peace Reporting and contributed to the establishment of this institution’s office in Prishtina.
After the war, he served as Secretary General of the Kosovo Journalists Association. In 2005, he was the media advisor and spokesperson for the Kosovo Government, led by Prime Minister Bajram Kosumi. Wherever he worked, he brought the seriousness of a scholar, the responsibility of a journalist, and the wisdom of a man who knew well the weight of public speech.
In his intellectual and professional life, Dauti created numerous friendships. Among them was the friendship with the prominent journalist and Balkan expert, Tim Judah. He knew how to build bridges between people and cultures, presenting the Albanian issue with dignity, knowledge and solid arguments.
Daut Daut was not a man of noise. He was a man of quiet work, of documentation, of measured speech, and of unwavering dedication. In conversation he was loving and sincere; in writing, sharp and argumentative; in friendship, loyal and generous. He shared knowledge without reserve and rejoiced when he could help others.
Dr. Daut Dauti passed away in London, on the morning of September 1, 2026, after a serious illness. With his passing, the family lost their loved one, friends lost a loyal companion, while Albanian culture, journalism, and historiography lost one of their tireless workers.
But people like Dauti do not disappear completely. They continue to live on in the books they wrote, the documents they discovered, the thoughts they inspired, and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know them. He will remain part of the history of Albanian activity in Great Britain and a worthy witness to the efforts of the people of Kosovo for freedom, independence, and statehood.
I express my most sincere condolences to the Dauti family, his relatives, friends and associates.
