Thousands of people joined protest marches in several cities in Serbia on Wednesday to express resistance against autocratic President Aleksandar Vucic.

Crowds of people gathered to mark the 11th anniversary of the collapse of a train station shelter in Novi Sad, which left 16 people dead and sparked a massive anti-government movement.

Protesters believe the collapse at the renovated railway station was caused by negligence in construction projects. The renovation of the building was part of a larger project with Chinese companies, the AP reported.

With their phone lights up, protesters in Belgrade walked in silence to honor the victims. Large crowds also gathered in Novi Sad amid heavy rain in the city.

No incidents were reported, as happened in past rallies where police were involved in tear gas attacks on protesters.

Students – the main force behind the protests – are demanding justice for the tragedy in Novi Sad, but also early parliamentary elections that they hope would oust Vucic's populist government.
