Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the whole world and I believe you like it a lot. But do you know who invented it? Let's learn it together!
Unlike most other sports, the origins of basketball can be traced back to a single person named James Naismith. In 1891, he had just graduated from college and was working as a trainer in a gym. That year the winter was very cold and snowy, so gym sessions were held indoors for months, and the kids started getting louder and louder.
For this reason, James Naismith's boss gave him a project to try to solve the problem by inventing a completely new game that children can play indoors and use up their energy. He was given just two weeks to invent this game and a few guidelines: the game couldn't take up too much space, it didn't have to be too rough and it had to help the kids stay fit.
So, James started thinking about the ball first. He didn't need a very hard ball like a golf ball or a baseball, so he chose the soccer ball. He then placed a basket over the players' heads so that they would throw the ball into the basket instead of dragging it along the ground. And he decided to name this sport basketball, because there was a basket that in the English language is called a basket and a ball that is called a ball. According to him, fouls in the game are committed when players run with the ball in their hands or attack the other player. After each score, the game had to stop for someone to climb the ladder to the basket and retrieve the ball. For this reason, another basket was needed so that the ball would fall to the ground by itself and the game would not stop after each point.
The first rules of the game did not include dribbling, the only way for the ball to reach the rest of the field was by passing it from one player to another. So the players quickly devised a passing strategy for themselves by tossing the ball into the air while running around.
