Kosovo surpasses regional countries in number of athletes at Mediterranean Games

Mediterranean Games

Over 3800 athletes will compete in the Mediterranean Games, which will be held in Taranto, Italy, from August 21 to September 3. Kosovo is part of this sporting event, and will be represented by a total of 163 athletes. Of these, 87 are male and 76 are female.

Of the countries nearby, Kosovo has the largest number of athletes. The organizer has now published a list of participating athletes from each country.

Albania is represented by 72 athletes. Bosnia and Herzegovina sends 76 athletes to Taranto, while Croatia sends 111.

Montenegro will be represented by 55 athletes, while North Macedonia will be represented by 88. Serbia will have 148 athletes at "Taranto 2026".

There will be athletes from 26 different countries in these Mediterranean Games. Italy, as the host, has the largest number of athletes – almost 500. There will also be numerous athletes from several other countries. Turkey has 332 athletes, France 330, Greece 281, Algeria 268 and Spain 249.

Participation in the Mediterranean Games is not limited. So there is no qualifying rate. It depends on the Olympic Committee of the respective country how many athletes it sends.

The Kosovo Olympic Committee (KOK) has decided on a larger number of athletes because the next edition of the Mediterranean Games, the 2030 edition, will be held in Pristina.

Kosovo is participating in the Mediterranean Games for the third time, an event that, however, does not have the weight it had decades ago. In "Tarragona 2018", in its debut, 40 athletes from Kosovo participated. In "Oran 2022", there were 38 athletes from Kosovo.

In Tarragona, Spain, judokas Distria Krasniqi, Nora Gjakova and Akil Gjakova won gold medals, while Loriana Kuka won silver. The number of medals increased to six in Oran, Algeria. Distria, Laura and Loriana won gold medals, while Flaka Loxha and Akil Gjakova, as well as boxer Shpëtim Bajoku, won bronze medals.

"Taranto 2026" is the 20th edition of the Mediterranean Games. This event was originally held in Alexandria, Egypt in 1951. Countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, from Europe, Africa and Asia, participate.

The Kosovo flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Mediterranean Games will be carried by boxer Donjeta Sadiku and taekwondoist Bleron Ademi. Again, medals are expected from judokas, but there are also hopes for medals in boxing and some other sport.
