A 61-year-old woman from Skopje has given birth to a healthy baby boy after 37 years of unsuccessfully trying to get pregnant, the director of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic in Skopje (GAK), Irena Aleksioska Papestjev, said on Tuesday.

"In the world of medicine there are no more borders, and medicine in [North] Macedonia can be compared to that of the world. This patient is the first to become pregnant with her frozen egg cell, which received in-vitro treatment in our country and the pregnancy was fully supervised here, while the birth was carried out at GAK", said Aleksioska Papestiev at a press conference.

The baby's name is Petar and today, together with his mother, they left the hospital and returned home.

The director of GAK said that the parents did not give up their desire to have a child, did not give in to failures, environmental pressures and prejudices.

The mother had had ten unsuccessful in-vitro fertilizations and ten miscarriages. She had performed three previous gynecological interventions, two in Belgrade and one at GAK in Skopje.

During the pregnancy, which was carefully supervised, she suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes, but in the end everything went wonderfully.

The father, who is 65 years old and retired, stated that he will take care of the baby.

In the region, the oldest woman to give birth is from Serbia, but with a donated ovary. In India, there is a case of a woman who became a mother for the first time at the age of 70. /REL
