According to data released by the Gesellschaft für Deutsche Sprache – GfDS (German Language Association), the most popular baby boy name in Berlin is Mohammed.
The name Mohammed ranks as the most popular name for newborn boys in the German capital when all variations of the name, such as the different spellings of this name such as Muhammed and variations such as Mehmet, are collected, the German tabloid "Bild" reported.
The name has also become very popular in Bremen, where it ranks third for newborn boys after Ben and Elias.
However, while the name Mohammed is the most popular name for children in Germany's urban capital, it is not ranked in the top ten most popular names across Germany, reports Koha.net.
The top five most popular names throughout Germany for boys are Paul, Alexander, Maximillian, Elias and Ben.
According to the GfDS, there are around 65,000 Paul names in Germany, explaining that even the most popular name Paul was given to only one in 76 children born last year.
Despite not being in the national top ten, the name Mohammed has seen a dramatic rise according to the 2017 GfDS report which shows that, in just one decade, Mohammed has risen from 97th position to 24th.
