There may be more water on the moon than previously believed. According to the research, water can be distributed directly on the lunar surface, not only on the cold and unlit parts of the moon.
Two studies have been published in the journal Nature Astronomy, and the researchers shared their findings during a NASA conference held on Monday.
The discovery represents a major advance in the mission to explore the rest of the solar system, as well as providing a better understanding of the lunar surface.
New questions are also being raised about how exactly the water got there and how it is able to survive the harsh conditions on the Moon.
"We confirmed water on the surface of the Moon for the first time with the help of the SOFIA telescope. "We don't yet know if we can use it as a source, but learning about water on the moon is critical to our research plans," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstein announced.
He stated that it is not yet known whether it can be used as a resource. Details of the discovery will be announced at a press conference to be held soon.
