A neurosurgeon at Kenya's largest hospital has been suspended after performing brain surgery on the wrong patient.
The scandal, which has sparked numerous reactions on social networks, is the latest drama to hit the Kenyatta National Hospital in recent weeks, following allegations of sexual assaults by staff on patients, as well as the theft of a baby, reports Koha.net.
The hospital has said that the surgeon, as well as two nurses and an anesthesiologist, have been suspended and are currently being investigated in connection with the operation "on the wrong patient".
The Minister of Health, Sicily Kariuki, has also suspended the Director of the hospital because of this scandal.
The "Daily Nation" newspaper has revealed that last Sunday, two patients were presented at the hospital.
One needed surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain, while the other only needed medication for swelling in his head.
After a few hours of starting the operation, the doctors discovered that the patient they had opened did not have a blood clot in the brain, and that they had actually operated on the wrong patient, writes the newspaper in question, Koha.net reports.
Kenyatta is Kenya's oldest and largest hospital, which also serves as a teaching hospital.
