A New Zealand woman has converted a 29-year-old car into a self-made, solar-powered electric vehicle "to show that it can be done".
Rosemary Penwarden, 63, has been driving her converted vehicle around country roads for three years. The project took her and a friend more than eight months of work, The Guardin wrote Friday.
"You must be a little crazy," she said. "I want to thank the oil companies for the motivation."
In total the project, including labor, cost Penwarden $24,000. The car is safe. After several years on the road, her project recently caught the attention of local journalists.
Her assistant, Hagen Bruggemann, has now converted about eight cars to electric motors.
Penwarden has said that the time and money she dedicated to the converted car is not possible for everyone.

"I am in a very privileged place," she said.
She charges the car at home, which runs entirely on solar energy.
