Only two active blocks, KEK starts overhaul in block "B2" as well

Local energy production is currently relying on only two active units of the Kosovo Energy Corporation, as KEK has started the planned overhaul of the B2 unit of “Kosova B”. The investment in this unit was planned to be made in March, but at the request of ERO to ensure energy stability, it was postponed to May. Unit B1 is also out of operation, and is not expected to return to operation until mid-December.

Only two production units of the Kosovo Energy Corporation are currently in operation, providing production of about 230 megawatts per hour.

KEK has announced that in accordance with the Annual Energy Balance, on Monday, it began implementing the regular 30-day annual overhaul of unit B2 of the "Kosova B" Power Plant. 

"This process is part of regular operational planning and aims to provide technical maintenance, increase operational safety and ensure the stable operation of the unit. Meanwhile, as previously announced, unit B1 of TC Kosova B has undergone major modernization projects, including the construction of electrostatic precipitators and the DeNOx system, which began in April and are expected to be completed in early December," KEK said in a statement.

In fact, investments in unit B2 were planned to be made in early spring, but the risk of a lack of production capacity during that period, when there is still high load on the network, has pushed the authorities to postpone the investments to May.

The energy balance for 2026 reflects this change following the Energy Regulatory Office's alarm about the impact on security of supply.

KOHA reported that KEK planned to take block B2 out of operation for 35 days, but that ERO had called this unacceptable, especially at a time when there is also parallel operation of "Termokos" for central heating needs.

"B2 - The unit will be shut down on 02.05.2026 for a period of 33 days, i.e. until 03.06.2026 to install the rotors of the supply pumps and to intervene in equipment and systems according to the planned overhauls to prepare the unit for long-term operation after the shutdown of unit B1", states the Annual Energy Balance 2026.

According to KEK officials, with the completion of these investments, operational safety is expected to increase, the lifespan of the units to be extended by about 20 years, and operation to be ensured in accordance with European Union standards in the field of environmental protection.

In the absence of local production, as a result of interventions in the blocks, there has been an increase in energy imports.

The same situation with imports is predicted throughout this year and next year.

However, following an agreement between KEK and KESCO for temporary rescheduling of obligations and deferral of payments for subsequent years, an increase in energy tariffs for 2026 has been avoided.
