Časlav Joliq has been sentenced to 5 years and 6 months for war crimes. The sentence is 2 years lower than in last year's verdict, as in the retrial Joliq was acquitted of two counts of the indictment related to crimes committed in the municipality of Istog.
The Basic Court in Pristina has sentenced Časlav Joliq to 5 years and 6 months in prison for war crimes committed during the period 1998-1999 in the Municipality of Istog.
Compared to the first verdict, the sentence is two and a half years less in prison.
"This court finds him guilty of point A, of the factual description of the indictment, respectively for the criminal offense 'War crimes against the civilian population', from article 142, in connection with article 22, according to the law. It tries the same for the criminal offense 'War crimes against the civilian population', it tries the same with a sentence of 5 years and 6 months of imprisonment, where the time spent in pre-trial detention is counted towards the sentence imposed," said Ngadhnjim Arrni, president of the trial panel.
During the announcement of the verdict, the accused Jolic, his lawyer, and the special prosecutor, Ilir Morina, were not present in the courtroom.
In the new trial, Joliqi was acquitted of two counts of the indictment related to war crimes.
"Regarding points B and C of the factual description, this court has found that it has not been proven that the accused Časlav Joliq committed these acts. The court, by a special ruling, continues the detention of the accused Časlav Joliq until the verdict becomes final," Arrni announced.
Joliqi was sentenced to eight years in prison, through a verdict announced on June 10, 2024, but the Appeals Court has returned the case for retrial.
According to the indictment, during the period from January 1998 to June 21, 1999, in the territory of the Istog Municipality, in complicity with other persons, Joliqi applied measures of torture and infliction of great suffering against the civilian population.
