Albania marked another step towards membership in the European bloc on Tuesday, after it opened four new chapters of negotiations for membership in the European Union. In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, senior EU official Marta Kos described the speed of Albania's journey towards the EU as impressive, while encouraging the country to continue at this pace.
The Republic of Albania opened four more chapters in the European Union (EU) accession negotiations process on Tuesday, bringing the total number of open chapters to 28.
Only five negotiation chapters remain to be opened, as out of the 35 chapters in this process, two are not being negotiated and remain at the end.
Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said on Tuesday that she is convinced that Albania will open the remaining chapters by the end of this year.
And, the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, has stated that his country will continue its maximum commitment to meet the objectives.
Albania has thus opened more chapters in less than a year than Serbia has in almost ten years. In this way, Albania, along with Montenegro, is becoming one of the leading countries in the EU accession negotiations and enlargement process.
At the intergovernmental conference between the EU and Albania, which was held on Tuesday and in which new chapters were opened for official Tirana, many European Union officials cited it as evidence that there is positive momentum for the enlargement process with the European Union, but that the speed depends on the merits of the candidate country.
The main challenge for Albania in the future will be the closing of chapters, as it cannot close any chapter until a positive report on the fulfillment of the transitional criteria in the area of the rule of law is adopted. But EU diplomats have expressed hope that with a real commitment from Albania, this challenge can also be overcome and that Albania can open and close the chapters next year.
