Illegal weapons, ammunition and equipment seized in North Mitrovica

During a search of the basement of a collective housing complex in the center of North Mitrovica, police confiscated weapons, ammunition and other illegal equipment. Following this action, the acting Minister of Interior, Xhelal Sveçla, said that there is no longer a haven for criminals or other elements that threaten state security.

Police found weapons, ammunition and other illegal equipment on Saturday, during an operation in a basement near "Car Lazar" square in North Mitrovica, a municipality inhabited mainly by Serbs.

According to the Police announcement, during the search, the following items were confiscated: an automatic rifle, a shotgun, 50 cartridges, a rifle holster, a pair of handcuffs, a rifle holder, a gas mask with its bag, a gun holster, and 5 empty magazines.

The State Prosecutor has been informed about the case, who has ordered the initiation of proceedings for "Unauthorized ownership, control or possession of weapons".

Authorities have announced that there are currently no arrests and that investigations are ongoing.

After this action, the acting Minister of Interior, Xhelal Sveçla, said that there is no longer any refuge for criminals or other elements that threaten state security.

"No part of the territory of our Republic is any longer a haven for criminals, weapons or other elements that threaten the security of our country. In the center of North Mitrovica, in the basement of a collective building, two weapons, ammunition of various types, magazines, gas masks and handcuffs were found today. We remain committed to law and order, security and stability for our citizens and for our Republic," Sveçla wrote on his Facebook account.

The Police have called on citizens to immediately report any information about illegal weapons, narcotics or other illegal activities via the number 192 or through the "Notify the Police" application.

A week ago, the Police found military uniforms, bulletproof vests, AK-47 rifle magazines with ammunition, and other military equipment in North Mitrovica. They are suspected to belong to the perpetrator of the explosion that killed Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku two years ago.

The police have not provided details about this, but have emphasized that they are suspected of belonging to a person who is wanted for the terrorist attack organized in Banjska, Zvečan, organized in 2023.

But Sveçla said that the uniforms and military equipment were the property of Nemanja Radivojević, known as "Gandhi." Radivojević is the main suspect in the bomb explosion that took Bunjak's life.

During the attack in Banjska, three members of the armed terrorist group were killed, while three others were captured by the police. However, dozens of participants fled to Serbia, including Milan Radoicic, who claimed responsibility for the attack.

Last year, the Special Prosecution Office filed indictments against 45 people for various roles they had within the group, ranging from organizing and directing terrorist activities to financing and money laundering.
