Classes begin in most municipalities, calls for applications for flood damages open

After the weather improved and the situation created by the floods calmed down, students in most municipalities of Kosovo have returned to school, starting the second semester of the teaching process. However, in three municipalities, lessons were postponed due to damage, lack of heating and difficulties in traffic. Lessons were also postponed in several villages in other municipalities, due to lack of heating.

Students in most municipalities in Kosovo have returned to school, following the improvement in the weather and the calming of the flooding situation.

But in the Municipality of Fushë-Kosovo, classes will start a week late, due to the floods that occurred last week and the lack of heating.

There will be a two-day delay in the municipalities of Malisheva and Drenas, as well as in several villages in other municipalities affected by the floods.

Acting Minister of Education, Arbërie Nagavci, said on the "Sot" show on KTV that the postponement of classes in these municipalities was due to traffic difficulties and problems with heating in schools.

"In Drenas and Malisheva it starts on January 14, in two days, this is mainly due to problems with road infrastructure due to floods and frost, and the lack of drinking water. And in Fushë-Kosovo, lessons will start on January 19, there lessons have been postponed due to the lack of central heating supply to schools. In other municipalities, based on the reporting we had last night and this morning, lessons have mainly started", Nagavci announced.

The acting minister has announced that the lost hours will be replaced to avoid any delays in the implementation of the curriculum.

The second semester of classes was scheduled to begin on January 8th.

But, after last week's floods, the Ministry of Education postponed the launch to January 12th.

Recent floods caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and agricultural land, as well as damage to roads and bridges.

The affected municipalities have already opened a call for applications from citizens for the damages caused.

In recent years, Kosovo has faced floods that have caused mainly material damage. The municipalities most affected at that time were Skenderaj, Istog, Klina and South Mitrovica.

However, there is no official data from the central level regarding the value of the damages caused and whether they have been compensated.

But, according to municipal data at the time, the total value of the damages was estimated at around 26 million euros.

The government in October 2023 allocated 9 million euros to assist municipalities affected by the floods that occurred in September 2022 and January 2023.
