The European Union expects Kosovo and Serbia to reach a compromise by April this year, when extraordinary elections are planned to be held in the northern municipalities, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, Tanja Fajon, in an interview for KOĖN.
The Slovenian diplomat has shown that from the meetings with the state leaders, she has taken the pledge for the readiness to start the talks as soon as possible on the basis of the Franco-German proposal, but also to implement the agreements from the previous dialogue.
"I reiterated that it is very important not to have further escalations of tensions, it is very important for us and the entire European community to see that both sides are really engaged in finding a compromise, before the local elections in April . It is very important to do everything to normalize the situation and the dialogue facilitated by the European Union must continue. The dialogue must continue and all agreements must be fulfilled, including the establishment of the Association of Municipalities with a Serbian Majority", said Fajon.
Asked about the unofficial documents that talk about the division and exchange of territories, which were also published in Slovenia in the past, Fajon said that such discussions are dangerous and against European values.
"We are big supporters, you have big friends in Slovenia, and every time there are discussions about changing borders or changing history, it's something very, very dangerous. So, on the contrary, I would advise to move faster towards reforms. The European Union is our common future and it can solve many open issues in the Balkans", said Fajon.
Fajon has also offered Slovenia's support in Kosovo's request for membership in the Council of Europe and the European Union.
