Deputies discuss the possibility of banning TikTok in Kosovo

Discussions about banning or limiting the use of the TikTok platform have also received attention in the Commission for Security Affairs in Kosovo. Lawmakers have raised concerns about privacy risks and the platform's impact on children, including self-harm from viral challenges

The ban on the use of the TikTok platform in Kosovo was discussed on Wednesday by the legislators at the meeting of the Security Affairs Committee.

At this meeting, where representatives of the Information and Privacy Agency were also present, the MP of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Dimal Basha, raised as an issue the possibility of tightening the criteria for opening accounts on TikTok.

"There are various European countries where ID is required from the person when they open the account and this makes it much more transparent and avoids the possibility of children opening accounts, I'm talking about those under the age of 16, so you were fine with explained to us now as members of this board if it enables us to be much more strict in opening accounts, especially minors", said Basha.

TikTok is one step away from being banned in the United States after last week the platform lost its legal battle at the Court of Appeals.

The US is concerned about the risk that China may have access to the data and use it to exert political influence.

The deputy of the Democratic Party, Hisen Berisha, said that Kosovo must treat seriously the danger warned by the USA.

"If the USA feels endangered, then little Kosovo should not only be endangered, but also determines the general life. I think that here we have to think about its use or prohibition, we have to think as states in this form, how equipped we are today as Kosovo to protect ourselves from these technological platforms", stated Berisha.

The commissioner of the Information and Privacy Agency, Krenare Sogojeva, said that the executive should decide on this.

"The biggest or crucial and basic problem is the lack of a Kosovo domain, it means an official domain, because we have many users from Kosovo, but since the service provider is outside the territory of Kosovo, then the Agency does not have the competence even with many control", declared Sogojeva.
Banning this Chinese platform is also being considered in Albania.

In addition to the risk of violating personal data, the use of TikTok also poses a risk to the mental and physical health of children. Dozens of students have self-harmed this year due to some challenges displayed on Tiktok.
