Activists of YIHR demand the resignation of the head of the Commission for Human Rights

Representatives of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, through an action, interrupted the meeting of the Parliamentary Commission for Human Rights. After hitting the tables and whistling, they demanded the resignation of the chairperson of this commission, Duda Balje, and the member Labinotte Demi-Murtezi, because of, as they said, the exclusionary language towards the LGBTIQ+ community

Through an action, representatives of three non-governmental organizations interrupted on Wednesday the meeting called by the Parliamentary Commission for Human Rights, in which the discussion on the protection and promotion of human rights was on the agenda.

With blows on tables and whistles, the organizations led by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) demanded the resignation of the head of the Commission, Duda Balje, and deputy Labinotte Demi-Murtezi.

On Balje's desk, they placed inscriptions that read: "Homophobes have no place in the Assembly."

"It should start with the resignation of the chairperson, because the chairperson, in addition to using exclusionary language for LGBT people in the Republic of Kosovo, at the same time we cannot address anything in this commission for human rights, considering that this commission is led by figures that promote the language of hatred and none of them distanced themselves from other members of the commission group on the president's statements", said activist Blert Morina.

After the action, the meeting of the Commission was interrupted.

MP Balje, as soon as she left the hall, said that she will not apologize.

In a subsequent announcement by the Youth Initiative for Human Rights, hate speech against the LGBTIQ+ community has been qualified as unacceptable.

"Duda Balje publicly stated again that she stands behind her exclusionary and discriminatory language towards LGBTIQ+ persons, under the classic pretext that 'it is my personal opinion'. He made this statement today in the discussion that was held in the Assembly. Discrimination continues from MP Labinotte Demi-Murtezi, present at this meeting, who publicly declared that 'LGBTIQ+ people spread diseases', a statement we heard from her also in the session of March 16, 2022", the announcement states.

Balje and Demi-Murtezi have declared against the Draft Civil Code that failed to be approved in the Assembly in March of last year. The second point of Article 1138, which allows civil unions between persons of the same sex, was mentioned as a reason.
