A secret room under the floor of Skanderbeg's burial site has been shrouded in mystery for 40 years. With the most recent interventions for the restoration of this cemetery, the lid was opened again and a sarcophagus was found there, whose identity is unknown. However, it still remains a mystery why the discovery of many years ago was closed and it was decided not to talk about it.
The lid on the floor of Skanderbeg's burial place in Lezhë was opened. Underneath it was said that there were important findings, but that were never published. ABC News has previously conveyed the emblematic findings of 40 years ago by archaeologists Frano Prendi, Loro Gjeçi and Ndue Përleka.
It took the burial site restoration intervention to dare to see what was hidden beneath the floor in the square room. The head of the museum-memorial in the Municipality of Lezha, Paulin Zefi, says that the discovery of many years ago was mysteriously closed and inexplicably it was decided not to talk about it anymore. But he provides some clues as to what is suspected.
"Historians and archaeologists are divided into two different opinions. One part has said that it could be a plinth of the ancient second century. The rest was of the opinion that the blocks are ancient, but reused for placing a sarcophagus," he said.
Zefi says that regardless of what the studies will reveal, this sarcophagus must be exposed, so a project will be drawn up for this purpose and will be sent to the Ministry of Culture.
The existence of another object below Skanderbeg's burial site was first reported by ABC News about 1 year ago and now the emblematic sarcophagus is waiting to be exposed.
