Në vitin 2005, bazuar në Ligjin për Zonat e Mbrojtura, Butrinti u shpall Park Kombëtar. Parku Kombëtar shërben si një zonë mbrojtëse për pronën e Trashëgimisë Botërore. “In this context, the Butrint Management Foundation, in accordance with its institutional mandate and the Butrint National Park Management Plan, plays a coordinating and supporting role in planning, facilitating and developing research, conservation activities and scientific collaborations, promoting inter-institutional coordination and advancing knowledge about the Butrint site,” the Butrint website states. The renowned archaeological park also hides many legends.
"According to legend, the founding of Butrint is linked to the aftermath of the Trojan War. Helen, the son of King Priam of Troy, or Pyrrhus, the son of Achilles, tried to sacrifice a bull on their ship, which jumped overboard and washed ashore before dying. The city of Butrint was founded exactly where he died. Virgil, the Roman court poet of the Augustan era, immortalized Butrint by bringing his hero, Aeneas, there, who landed and found a colony of Trojan refugees here," the website reads.
Butrint came back into the spotlight when a young Italian archaeologist, Luigi Maria Ugolini, put all his energy and intellectual passion into investigating the legend of Aeneas.
After the excavations at Finiq, he expanded his focus to Butrint. In December 1927, Ugolini sent an official letter to the Albanian Ministry of Education, announcing that the Italian archaeological mission proposed to explore Butrint in 1928. Equipment and supplies for the expedition were sent to Albania on 8 February 1928, and that same month, to exploit the propaganda value of the project, a film crew from the Istituto Luce in Rome arrived in Butrint. By Easter of the first excavation season, Ugolini's team had discovered the large eastern gate, which he later called the "Porta Skea", a Roman mosaic on a sacred spring near the Lion's Gate, and the colorful mosaic of the Baptistery.
