Exhibition with images of Onufri's icons on the 100th anniversary of the excavations in Apollonia

Apollonia

Founded around the beginning of the 4th century BC, the ruins of Apollonia were discovered at the beginning of the 19th century. From the first centuries of the city's life, there are some remains of the defensive wall and an archaic temple dedicated to Artemis, the most worshiped goddess of the Apollonians

The exhibition honors the start of archaeological excavations by the well-known French archaeologist, Léon Rey. The Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation, Blendi Gonxhja, said that this activity comes as a collaboration between the two institutions. "The exhibition will remain open for a month as a good opportunity to promote the 'Onufri' iconographic museum in one of the most visited archaeological parks in Albania," he wrote on Facebook. Apollonia is located 12 kilometers from the city of Fier. The city got its name in honor of the god Apollo. Among the 24 cities throughout the Mediterranean world that bore this name in antiquity, Apollonia of Illyria was the most important and played a major role as a trade intermediary between the Hellenes and the Illyrians.

Apollonia is located 12 kilometers from the city of Fier. The city got its name in honor of the god Apollo. Among the 24 cities throughout the Mediterranean world that bore this name in antiquity, Apollonia of Illyria was the most important and played a major role as a commercial intermediary between the Hellenes and the Illyrians. Archaeologists call Apollonia the "Pompeii of Albania", as it is believed that only 10 percent of the territory of the former city has been discovered until today. Founded around the beginning of the XNUMXth century BC, the ruins of Apollonia were discovered at the beginning of the century  XIX. From the first centuries of the city's life, there are some remains of the defensive wall and an archaic temple dedicated to Artemis, the most worshiped goddess of the Apollonians. The large territory covered with monuments, the wonderful panoramas and landscapes over the plain of Myzeqe and the Adriatic Sea on the one hand, as well as the favorable geographical position near the big cities and the beaches of the south, on the other hand, make the Archaeological Park of Apollonia easily accessible to the visitor and a privileged destination for cultural tourism in Albania.

After a visit in 2020, the archaeologist from Kosovo. Milor Berisha would write that Apollonia was the gravitating center of the ancient Illyrian cultures from the Iron Age, but also a Hellenic colony of the Corinthians established in 588 BC on the Field of Gylakion of the Taulantians.

"In Apollo, Octavian Augustus, the first Roman emperor, was trained in knowledge, who received rhetoric lessons here and was trained in oratory. At the peak of its development, Apollonia housed over 60 inhabitants," wrote Berisha.

According to him, this city was named Apollo to commemorate, venerate and worship the god Apollo who, according to mythology, was the omnipotent lord of oracles, prophecy "the god of healing, protector of archers, of music, poetry and arts, of the sun's rays, of knowledge and knowledge, of the herd and herds, as well as the protection of the young".
