Genocide deniers have a name

The leaders of the EU must end the practice of remembering the genocide in Srebrenica once a year and condemning its denial, while the whole year pampering those who deny this genocide. Genocide deniers have a name and they are the representatives of the state of Serbia and the leaders of the Serbs in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo. By tolerating genocide denial, the EU encourages this denial, and this does Serbia no good either.

The high representatives of the European Union also spoke on Sunday on the anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, as they did in previous years. Once again, they called on political leaders in the Western Balkans region to lead by example the path to reconciliation and confronting the roots of hatred from the past that led to the genocide, recognizing what happened as it happened. Even, through a joint statement, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, and the Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, recalled Europe's responsibility for that genocide.

"Europe, likewise, has not forgotten its responsibility for not being able to prevent the genocide in Srebrenica, one of the most serious crimes in the modern history of Europe. Srebrenica painfully reminds us of the need to strongly commit to peace, human dignity and the values ​​on which the union was built. Serving justice and building a better society are the best ways to remember those who were systematically and deliberately killed. This is a necessary step to work for a better common future for all Europeans", these two representatives of the European Union wrote in their communiqué.

In a similar way, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, has also spoken out, calling for such a thing to never happen again on the territory of Europe.

What can be seen in these reactions is the call not to deny the genocide. In fact, denial of the genocide is already becoming a criminal offense, punishable by law in some European countries.

"There can be no impunity. Genocide is genocide, be it in Srebrenica or elsewhere. International courts, local courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring countries must continue to bring justice to all victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, as well as to their family members. Peace can only be built on justice. There is no place in Europe for genocide denial, revisionism and glorification of war criminals, which goes against fundamental European values. Attempts to rewrite history are unacceptable", wrote Borrell and Varheli.

A proper statement though. But a hypocrisy can be seen in it. Nowhere is it mentioned who were the victims and who were the perpetrators of the genocide.

Someone would say that "it doesn't matter", but in this case it does. Because about 8000 people were killed just because they were Bosnian Muslims. That is why it is genocide, because the intention to kill them precisely because of their ethnicity was proven. And this genocide was carried out by Serbian forces. So the genocide was committed in the name of protecting the Serbian people. It was committed against members of another nation. Therefore, there is no need for "political correctness" to not mention that the victims were the Bosnian Muslims and the perpetrators were the Serbian forces. And we are talking about a massacre of such great proportions. For such a short time, that it cannot be said that this was "done by only a few individuals". Because there is no possibility, not even physical, for "some individuals" to collect them, kill them, throw them in mass graves and cover them with 8000 people in three or four days.

It is not the right way for the representatives of the EU to address "all the leaders in the region" with a call not to deny the genocide, not to relativize it, not to glorify the war criminals and not to make efforts to rewrite the history.

Because this is how the impression is created as if "many leaders across the Balkans" are denying the genocide in Srebrenica. And this is done only by Serbian nationalists and no one else.

The center of genocide denial is Belgrade. Besides the Government of Serbia, these efforts are also supported by the Serbian Orthodox Church and the media. Those in Serbia who make an effort to show the reality and help Serbia face its past are lynched by the media, at the instigation of the government. Even neighboring countries, like Montenegro and Kosovo, are pressured, and in some moments even mocked, when they adopt resolutions, like all normal Europe, to condemn the genocide in Srebrenica.

If the EU really wants to help stop genocide denial it needs to send signals to deniers, not through statements, but by refusing to meet them and roll out the red carpet for them. Besa even prohibiting them from entering the territory of the EU. Only then will they understand that there is no place in Europe for denying the genocide in Srebrenica. Because, for now, deniers of this genocide are welcome in the EU.
