Supporting Ukraine is the only fair side of history

If he only looked at political interests, without any morals and empathy, even Kosovo would probably have more reasons to be on Russia's side. Ukraine, like Russia, has not recognized Kosovo as a state. The interest from Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council with the right to veto, would be greater than from Ukraine. But the war in Ukraine is not a sports match where you can support one side or the other, or be neutral. It is an aggression accompanied by terrible crimes committed by Russia against a country and an entire people. And Kosovo rightfully, without reservations and without conditions, supports Ukraine, because this is the only fair side of history. It should never be forgotten that the free world supported Kosovo when it was necessary, because Kosovo was on the right side of history, and it had nothing to do with political calculations

It is wrong to say that morality has no place in politics. Although politics is mainly driven by interests, it is not entirely devoid of moral norms. And often it is precisely these norms that influence dramatic changes in political calculations. Especially in free democratic countries, with free media and a developed society, there are limits to how far political leaders can go, ignoring non-political criteria in their actions. Russia's aggression in Ukraine has challenged these values. And these temptations are not easy for many countries. Perhaps for no country is it more difficult than for Germany. A state whose people have a bad collective memory of collective moral responsibility for what happened under fascism. But in general the entire Western world is facing a moral obligation that fortunately has also become a political priority; maximum help to the people of Ukraine to protect themselves from the terrible aggression of Russia.

As much as Russian propaganda, aided in many circles around the world, tends to blame the West for this war, the truth is simple. Russia has attacked Ukraine. This attack was encouraged, wittingly or unwittingly, by NATO's refusal to speak out in favor of Ukraine's NATO membership. It was also encouraged by the statements of Western politicians that NATO and Western countries will not be involved in the war in Ukraine. And when the Russian invasion began, then the people of Ukraine decided to defend themselves to the death, faced with the alternative of disappearing as a nation and as a state. And the West had no choice but to do its best to help him.

It was not the West that instigated the war, it was Russia that initiated the aggression. The statements that are also heard from the leaders of NATO countries, such as the president of Turkey, Erdogan, the president of Croatia, Milanovic, or the prime minister of Hungary, Orban, that the West by arming Ukraine is prolonging the war, or "is fighting against Russia through Ukrainians", are terrible statements. So, they would prefer that the Ukrainians are not properly armed, are not able to stand up to Russia, and this would help the war to "end as soon as possible". There is no doubt that "with the quick end" those who are against the arming of Ukraine, think of the quick victory of Russia.

At the beginning of the war, perhaps in many Western countries such a calculation existed. In Brussels, even the experts in the EU and NATO, who are paid with huge salaries as such, predicted that within a few hours Russia would take Kiev with tanks, shoot the political leadership in the squares, and then Russia would enter into talks with The West for the rights of citizens of Ukraine. This was the political calculation in the heads of some politicians. As at the beginning of the war in the former Yugoslavia in 1991, the calculations were that the "Yugoslav forces" would win within a few days in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and then the world would make an agreement with Belgrade. It should never be forgotten that the West imposed a ban on the export of arms to Croatia and Slovenia "so as not to influence the escalation of the war", which was a direct help to Milosevic, who had taken control of the People's Army of Yugoslavia, so he had enough weapons for some wars.

The obligation to help Ukraine is not easy. If the world decided not to help this country, Russia would probably win the war by now. Oil and gas would flow easily from Russia, they would be even cheaper, there would not be so much inflation. But it happens that in history generations of politicians are tested to decide which side of history they want to be on. And there are not many solutions, but there is only one. The only fair side of the story is support for Ukraine. And this is not a political calculation, but it is a human, moral obligation, first of all.

Therefore, Kosovo has chosen the only right side of history, simply, with the heart and with the collective memory that the people of Kosovo have had, facing the aggression that wanted to eradicate that people from their lands. And Kosovo has not made political calculations here, as Serbia, Turkey, Hungary, India or some other countries have done, for example. Kosovo has had no guesses at all and has been vocal in support of the freedom-loving people of Ukraine.

It should not be forgotten that Kosovo received support not because of alliances or because of the interests that the states that intervened had from Kosovo. But because Kosovo was right in what it wanted. Its people wanted freedom, security and their rights. As the people of Ukraine love them today. Therefore, even the free countries have no more room for dilemmas, unless they are ready to help Ukraine as much as it will be necessary. And it will be needed for a long time.
